The continual increase in competition and changing customer expectations always put pressure on OEMs & suppliers to design and develop products which fall within stringent cost targets. In order to gain a competitive edge most of the OEMs and suppliers entrust on adding more features at a competitive price. It therefore becomes imperative for the design team to constantly work towards achieving stringent cost targets. We assist our customers in effective product cost management, by providing Design to Cost solutions. Cost management is an intrinsic part of our design process. We have successfully demonstrated methodologies to treat target cost as an integral design parameter, which needs to be achieved during product design and development phase. Our frugal engineering approach has helped global OEMs to develop cost effective vehicles, catering to the unique needs of global market. Our 'Design to Cost' Approach
- Understanding of customer requirements and the perceived value.
- Establishment and allocation of target costs down to systems and sub-systems
- Understanding of the products' cost drivers and consideration of cost drivers in establishing product specifications.
- Develop product and life cycle cost models to project costs early in the development cycle to support decision-making.
- Develop modules and design processes that radically reduces the costs.
- Active consideration of costs during development as an important design parameter.
- Low cost design approach by experimenting with concept and design alternatives.
- Value analysis and function analysis to identify functions with a high cost-to-function ratio.
- Application of design for manufacturability principles.
- Continuous improvement through value engineering to improve product value over the longer term.
- Support in sourcing strategy to drive cost reduction - Identify, evaluate & select vendors from low cost countries.
Design to Cost - A Case Study A leading Japanese car maker, planning to launch a low cost car of around $3500 for Asian market, was faced with a challenge to develop an engineering concept that would meet the requirements of first time buyers. Mahindra Engineering was chosen for this assignment based on our in-depth automotive domain knowledge, good understanding of the local market and time tested history of frugal engineering.
